Zorn   and   Thorn:Why

I really don't know.
I think I started likin them after listenin ta "Jesters of da Moon" fer too long. God, I love that song. It's so cool...
Anyway, I kept thinkin ta myself "Anyone who has such cool theme music CAN'T be ALL bad..."
And so it began. I thought about em fer a long time.
My perception of Zorn and Thorn is different from a lotta peeps. I identify with em, on a strange level. I've thought a lot about em and how they would have lived and felt (if yer thinkin I'm a total nutcase now, go ta a really popular shrine. Makes sense there, doesn't it? I'm not da only one who does this.). I tried ta think like they would...
I personally think Zorn and Thorn are very lonely and confused...surrounded by people that never felt the way they do. They obviously were split apart earlier on by some force or something, and I REALLY doubt it was voluntary. How would it feel, I mean, to be forced into two seperate beings like that? How long have they lived that way? Constantly havin ta wake up and see da missin part of yer soul starin right at ya? How much did they both lose when they split? Everyday, it'd be mockin them, right in front of em. They must have been in such constant pain.
Not ta mention that everyone around the castle seems to have an extremely short temper around them. I REALLY doubt that Thorn's speech impediment is intentional, and I don't think he could have helped it. No doubt the part of his brain that helped form sentences went to Zorn instead of him, but what was he supposed to do? So he and his brother became hated for reasons they couldn't help or change. And despite all this, despite all this stuff they had to go through, both of them cursed with fractured and broken personalities, they were extremely loyal to the Royal Family. Why is this?
Probably because the family took them in when they had been broken apart. They must have been so confused, so upset. Can you imagine that kind of tragedy? To have a part of you, a full HALF of you, taken away against your will? To have to live every day with this kind of knowledge, to live and try to lead a normal life while being only half a person? The pain it must have caused them both to have to stare at the other? And yet, the two of them remained together. They needed eachother, and were there for eachother when they were truly needed.
They did their assigned jobs, more so even, and when Brahne went nuts, they STILL followed her. THAT admirable.
Later on, they build the Black Waltzes. That takes skill. They have to know something about how to create and manipulate Black Mage genes, and they must have had a great deal of technical and biological skill. They're smart.
Even further on, they wander, homeless, but refuse to give in. They don't know where to go, all their loyal service thrown completely in their face. They refuse to give up, and end up serving Kuja, given no other option. And to him, they're loyal as well.
They control the Black Mages, for some reason. I assume their harsh treatment of them is a reflection of their frustration and anger towards their own position and at being split in general. They see themselves in the mages, and that is why they hate them and mistreat them so. Or at least, that's what I think.
Later on, they're ordered to extract the Eidolons from Eiko's body, but they constantly state that doing so will endanger her life. They don't want to kill her. However, they had ordered the Black Mages countless times before to kill and slay. Why were they hesitating now...? Unless at some point they learned something about life. But when? Either way, they didn't want to kill Eiko just to get her Eidolons. Perhaps relating to my Eidolon theory (on the info page) they would have felt guilt in killing an eidolon's host. It's hard to say. They do show reluctance...
And then they merge...and before they die, they say something like "now you all carry the virus as well...". What virus are they talking about?
Either way, I view Zorn and Thorn as horrificly tragic. They join once again, only to be killed a short time later. I find their courage in facing the trauma inflicted on them extremely admirable, and I find them strong and not responsible for the majority of the things they're forced to do.
I like Zorn and Thorn because they make me think. Think a lot. And I like that in a character. Or in this case, Characters. ^_^ Now I feel even more in touch with them then ever. I think they deserve more credit.
Cause if ya think about it, they really had it pretty bad.
