Zorn and Thorn are two (I would call them twin but Kuja said quite clearly they weren't fer some reason) jesters in FFIX that have supremely cool theme music and talk in da followin way...

Zorn(I think): This is your fault!
Thorn: My fault it isn't! Your fault it is!
Zorn: What are you speaking? It wasn't my fault!
Thorn: Lies you are telling! Your fault it is!
Anybody around: SHUT UP!!

Got on a lot of peeps nerves. Got on mine too at first, actually.

Anyway, Zorn and Thorn worked fer Queen Brahne (and I think they did for a good long while, since everyone in the castle seemed used to their presence) until, after they extracted the Eidolons from Garnet, they failed ta stop her running off with the pendent. They were banished from da court and therefore had nowhere ta go (they mentioned not being able to survive without the queen's backing...I wonder why this is. Maybe related to later on when they turn into Meltigemini and mention that Virus...did they have this virus as normal jesters? Did Brahne give them medicine to reduce the effects? I'm blanking on battles with them individually, so I can't recall if they poison you or not...)

So, without much of an option, they went ta Kuja, who treated them even worse then Brahne did (or so it is implied I think). I'm pretty sure they thought Kuja might get them back inta da palace or provide them that "backing" that they needed from the royal family. Medicine?

Anyway, after they try (unsuccessfully, unfortunately) ta extract Eidolon's from Eiko and kill her in da process, Kuja says "Don't worry, I hear these twins put on quite a good show. Of course, they're really not twins at all..."

I was like "...da heck?"

And then they started glowin and there was this joint heartbeat and stuff. They got up all creepy and doll-like. I was like "...DA HECK!?"

Then they merged inta that weird Zorn/Thorn crazy creepy-lookin thingy and I was like "WHAT DA FRICK IS GOIN ON!?"

Apparently Zorn and Thorn weren't Jesters, but some kind of monster that had been split inta two different entities, Zorn and Thorn, and somehow Kuja (or somethin else) triggered them goin back inta Meltigemini.

I still don't get it. It doesn't mention them at all after that, or explain why they did that. After ya kill Meltigemini, it's as if they never existed.

They had apparently been around Alexandria court fer some time, so I don't think Kuja had somethin ta do with them being there...unless he made them a long time ago and set them in da court as spies...maybe Garland made them? I dunno, it's very vague on them. Maybe I missed an ATE that explained it or somethin. Either way, Garnet, Beatrix, Steiner, and Queen Brahne all are familiar with them and don't seem OVERTLY hostile towards them, so it seems odd that they would have come with Kuja, and if I recall they join up with Kuja later on and that's really when they first meet up with him, although I sadly lack the Jesters on a Dark Night ATE script.

Another tidbit about Zorn and Thorn that's never explained...they're da only ones who know how ta extract Eidolons! Why is that? Brahne sure doesn't know how, and Kuja doesn't or else he wouldn't need em later on. So Zorn and Thorn hafta be connected ta or somehow knowledgable about Eidolons in some way ta be able ta pull em out, since they're da only ones who can do it. How are they connected...?

Here's a random theory...what if they themselves, at one point, had BEEN an eidolon? Someone outside of da summoner tribe tried ta find a way ta summon/use em, and instead resulted inta splittin em inta Zorn and Thorn as they are taday. That would explain why Zorn and Thorn go inta Meltigemini later on, and why they do it after Madeen attacks. Da summon must have reminded em of what happened, and brought em back tagether! It would explain why they're da only one who can take out Eidolons cause they're connected ta em in someway. I dunno, it's just a theory, but it makes sense. It solves a few questions, anyway.

Fact still remains that Zorn and Thorn are da only ones who can extract Eidolons...so how long were they there? If I recall correctly, Brahne and Hubby found Garnet when she was little and still had a horn. Did they know that meant she was a summoner? I can't remember. But if it did, did they know they could extract eidolons? How long have Zorn and Thorn been around? Did Brahne bring them in simply for the Eidolone extraction (which seems unlikely) or was this just an ability that came to light later? What seems most plausible is that it mentions that Brahne was a nice lady at first until Kuja came along and woke up all the greed in her heart...now, Kuja knows how to use Eidolons (for some reason) so it stands to reason that he'd know how to do stuff to them, and maybe he noticed that Zorn and Thorn had that ability to extract eidolons and/or were an eidolon some time ago. Then maybe Kuja convinced Brahne that Zorn and Thorn could be key into getting her all the power in the world. That'd make sense, but how would Kuja know those kind of things anyway? There's a blurry connection. If I recall, Kuja can use and trap eidolons AND corrupt them over to his side, so he can manipulate them to the same degree or even more then summoners can. But he can't extract them. Why is it that only Zorn and Thorn can do that, when Kuja can convert Eidolons to his cause? Zorn and Thorn have a special link that no one else seems to have. I'm guessing Kuja knew this, but then...was he directly involved in stealing Garnet's Eidolons? I don't recall him being there and the whole scheme being more of Brahne's idea, and then he used her to blow stuff up then stole her Eidolons. Was it his idea to steal Garnet's Eidolons? Did he suggest to Brahne that Zorn and Thorn could be used that way?

It seems to me that if Kuja was responsible for Zorn and Thorn's Fracture, then why would he use Brahne as an intermediary instead of just kidnapping Garnet himself and stealing her eidolons that way? I don't think that Kuja introduced the jesters to the Royal Court because, again, everyone seems quite familiar with them and it would be a really roundabout way to get Garnet's Eidolons, not that letting Brahne blow stuff up with them was exactly straightforward...

But if Kuja did not bring Zorn and Thorn, how and why exactly did they become servants to the queen? Much less such dependent servants (that "backing", remember?). It seems random that the Royal Family would employ such bizarre people as Zorn and Thorn who just happen to have the ability to extract Eidolons that the princess just happens to have. Did Brahne know they could do that? I somehow doubt it, I don't think it would have come up. And without Kuja's influence, I doubt Brahne would have gone crazy and tried to extract them in the first place. Who in the family could have somehow encountered the jesters and what convinced them to employ them?

One theory is that when Garnet washed ashore, she had the Meltigemini Eidolon with her that fractured somehow on the journey, therefore Zorn and Thorn were found and, for some reason, kept the same as Garnet. It's a weird coincidence that Garnet looks like the Royal Family's dead daughter, isn't it? Sorry, tangent.

Another theory is that Garnet, when young, may have tried to summon an Eidolon and screwed up, fracturing Meltigemini into Zorn and Thorn. Yet another involves perhaps Doctor Tot (he was a doctor and not a professor, right?) and maybe Brahne attempting some scientific experiments on how Eidolons worked and accidentally summoned and fractured Meltigemini.

Another interesting thing is Meltigemini itself. It resembles Zorn and Thorn in a weird way, but even weirder is its entire poison atmosphere. Meltigemini casts Bio on everyone and Virus Breath and stuff like that. Everything about Meltigemini is poison.

But far more interesting is what Meltigemini says as it attacks with Virus Breath (I think that's what it is)...

"Now you carry the virus too..."

What da heck does that MEAN?

Another variant on the "Zorn and Thorn were an Eidolon" theory is that, during early stages of experimenting with corrupting and controlling Eidolons, Kuja made a type of virus that weakened/fractured Meltigemini into Zorn and Thorn. This kind of brings up the issue of whether or not Kuja brought Zorn and Thorn with him to the palace, or just dumped them somewhere where the palace staff found them, although Kuja (to my recollection) doesn't indicate that he knew them previously.

If Zorn and Thorn were a poison-element Eidolon, if when they got fractured, they must have been greatly weakened. It's possible then that both the twins became afflicted with their own poison at that point, relating back to my previous theory about backing. They become rather upset when Brahne fires them stating that "We cannot live without the queen's backing!" which I find rather curious. It could be that the entire country of Alexandria hates them so much they want them dead, which I find somewhat implausible. After all, they only did bad things after Brahne told them too, or at least that's how it seemed as no one was suspicious of Zorn and Thorn before the entire thing blew up.

However, if their previous poison nature that they had been immune too had increased in strength so that Zorn and Thorn were constantly on the verge of death and required medical assistance, that would explain why they stayed with the Royal Family so long and were so upset when they got fired.

Although it is arguable that their line mentioned above refers to the fact that, since Zidane and co escaped and the kingdom knows of their treachery, they could easily be killed, which would make sense I guess and not require so much wild conjecture.

Still, interesting stuff relating to that virus.

In Japanese, I'm pretty sure da kata fer their names read as Zo-nu and So-nu. That kinda makes sense, considering, cause So and Zo look almost exactly alike. S in Japanese is also often used instead of Th, since they don't have that sound in their language. So it becomes Zonu and Thonu, and then only a jump ta Zorn and Thorn.

What I'm really curious about is how they talk in Japanese. I'm just wondering whether da American Translators put in Thorn's weird backward talk just ta differentiate da two of them or if it was present in Japanese at all. If it was, it would likely be, perhaps, Thorn putting the verb at da front of da sentence instead of at da end, mixin up da sentence structure. Or maybe Thorn had an osaka dialect or something or some weird thing that made his speech different. Maybe he only spoke in Kata or something. I don't know, but I am mad curious. I would love ta know if anyone who played da Japanese version of da game and had some rudimentary grasp of Japanese could tell me. I'm amazingly curious. I should go look fer screenshots of them in japanese, but as ya may know, pics of Zorn and Thorn are amazingly difficult ta find fer some reason.

Actually, thanks ta Catiri on da FFIX LJ community, they told me that in Spanish, Zorn and Thorn do not reverse their sentences at all! Instead, they add ending words... The way they talk in Spanish it's a big deception; they talk like any normal person would. There are no reversed sentences, which is a pity.

But, they do have a certain peculiarity in the way they talk, all of their sentences end with the word ", pífate" or ", páfate". Do they mean something in Spanish?... No xD
They are just random words they were given in... dunno, kind of compensation for not inversing their sentences? No idea.
Something very similar happens with Quina. Quina is not a she/he in Spanish. Quina is treated like a female in the Spanish version. She talks like a normal person too, but ends her sentences with a "Ñam, ñam", which is the equivalent for "Yum yum" (I guess) in English.
The "ending phrases"-thingy-words, annoys me a bit, not so many characters have this "compensations" in the way they talk, but it still annoy me. I like accents and funny ways of talking.
Also, Zorn and Thorn are called Son and Ton in Spanish.

AHA! How weird! So maybe Z and T's accent was just thrown in there randomely by translators. How weird! Hmmmmm.

In my never endin quest ta find some japanese screenshots of Zorn and Thorn so I can see exactly HOW THORN TALKS, I found this instead. Interesting, eh?

Actually, she's been acting rather strange since my birthday last year. The same day that tall man visited us... Maybe he had something to do with it. Come to think of it, that was when things began to change. Doctor Tot left Alexandria shortly afterwards, too. What happened that day?
Zorn and Thorn came into Dagger's room.
Zorn: Queen Brahne summons you.
Thorn: Come with us.
Dagger: What!? How dare you speak to me like that!?
Zorn: Quiet!
Thorn: With us, you are coming, and that is that!
Dagger: (What was that phrase...? Oh yeah.) Get off me, you scumbag!
Zorn: What was that? I do not understand.

Zorn and Thorn tried to go the other way, but the other soldier blocked their way.
Alexandrian Soldier 2: State your business.
Zorn: The queen's guests have arrived.
Thorn: Let them come in, shall we?
Alexandrian Soldier 2: I shall inquire. Stay here. (to Brahne) Your Majesty...
Brahne was told that the guests are coming.
Alexandrian Soldier 2: ...Yes, Your Majesty. (to Zorn and Thorn) Let the guests through. You two are dismissed.
Zorn: What does that mean?
Alexandrian Soldier 2: Queen Brahne is quite upset with you two for letting the princess escape with the pendant. You should go now.
Thorn Whatever to do are we!?
Zorn: We cannot live without the queen's backing! We must first tell the guests to come in!
Zorn and Thorn left.
Brahne: Phew...

I don't have the script for the "Jesters on a Dark Night" ATE which really sucks, cause that one's rather important, but I'll find it sometime. Anyway...

This sequence is interesting because Zorn and Thorn begin rhyming for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

Zidane: (to Black Mage 1) Hey, can we really trust Kuja?
Black Mage 1: ......
Zidane: (to Black Mage 2) Hey, can we really trust Kuja?
Black Mage 2: ......
Zidane: Hey, say something!
Black Mage 2: ......
Zorn: They will not answer to you.
Thorn: Respond to our orders only, they do.
Zidane: Why, y-you backstabbing bozos!
Zorn: Those are slanderous words!

Zorn: You needn't concern yourself with such things.

Thorn: Hilarious! Nothing but toys are they here!
Zidane: I don't think you guys are any different.
Thorn: What!?
Zorn: Rubbish!
Zidane: You say that the black mages have no souls, but you guys are pawns, just like them! Am I right, or what?
Zorn: You won't be talking so big once we're done with you!

Zidane: Well, let's just take it easy until we arrive. (to Black Mage 2) Drive safe, alright?

(Second Extraction)

Zorn: Eidolon of eternal life!
Thorn: Eidolon of infinite powers!
Zorn: Arise from thy eternal slumber!
Thorn: Depart after thy endless wait!
Zorn: Let there be light!
Thorn: Let there be life!
Zorn: The time has come!
Thorn: The time is now!
The screen switches to Zidane's group.
Dagger: !!! ...

Zidane's group runs to Eiko. The screen switches to Zorn and Thorn.
Zorn: That was odd.
Thorn: Odd, that was.
Zorn: We failed again!
Thorn: Again we have failed!
Zorn: Did you make some mistake?
Thorn: Mistake, I did not! Yours, the mistake must be!
Zorn: I made no mistake at all!
Thorn: The truth, do you speak?
Zorn: Of course, I speak the truth!
Kuja: Will you two just shut up!?
Zorn: I-It's his fault!
Thorn: H-His fault, it is! The one who messed up is you!
Zorn: You're the one who messed up!

Zorn: Continuing further will endanger the subject's life!
Thorn: Only at the age of sixteen can eidolons be extracted!
Kuja: You two just don't get it! I need an eidolon more powerful than Alexander! An eidolon with the power to bury Garland! His powers are so incredible; I cannot even come close. I must destroy him before Terra's plan is activated, or my soul will no longer be my own! Who cares if she lives? I want that eidolon!
Zorn and Thorn were going back to doing their duty, but then, Mog came out.
Mog: Kupo!
Zorn: Where did that come from?
Thorn: You, get out of our way!
Zorn+Thorn: Master!
Mog: Kupo...!
Kuja: Well!?
Zorn: Her pet moogle is interfering with the extraction process!
Thorn: Certain are we that it caused the failure!
Kuja: Kill the runt! We're running out of time!
Mog: Kupo...!
Eiko woke up.
Eiko: Mog... No, Mog. Hide behind me... Mog? What is it?
Mog: Eiko, thank you for everything.
Eiko: Mog, what are you saying?
Mog: Don't worry, kupo. I will always be with you, kupo.
Eiko: Mog!
Zidane's group approaches closer.
Zidane: This way!? Whoa!
A bright light came from Mog who is sacrificing herself to help Eiko.
Eiko: Mog!
Zorn: We will put you to death!
Thorn: Put you to death, we will!
Eiko fights Zorn and Thorn.
Mog: Eiko! Use Terra Homing, kupo!
Eiko: Okay!
Eiko summons Terra Homing and it KO'd Zorn and Thorn. After that...
Mog: I wanted to be by your side, Eiko... so I became Mog. Don't worry. I'll always watch over you, kupo.
Later, Zidane's group arrived.
Zidane: !!! Eiko, are you okay?
Eiko: I'm alright. Mog saved me... I never knew that Mog was an eidolon. She always looked after me... disguised as a moogle. Even though... even though she was weak... She fought her best to protect me.
Zidane: So that's what happened...
Suddenly, a ribbon fell from the air and Eiko caught it.
Eiko: Mog's ribbon... Mog...
Eiko received Ribbon.
Zidane: It's alright, Eiko. Mog'll always watching over you.
Eiko: You're right...
Kuja: How can that-That moogle went into a Trance!?
Zidane: Kuja!
Kuja: So...an eruption of anger against one's surroundings induces a complete Trance! It's not the will to live, nor is it the desire to protect another!
Zidane: Man, you're really goin' off! Hello!?
Kuja: That means...I simply need a powerful soul, even if that soul is not my own! No, wait... And it can be found there! Hahahaha!!
Zidane: Kuja! What are you plotting?
Kuja: I am done with you!
Vivi: W-Wait a minute!
Vivi tried to approach closer, but the jesters move. Kind of lift off the ground to some pulse of some kind.
Zidane: Vivi! Look out!
Kuja: Don't worry, I hear these twins put on quite a good show. Of course, they're really not twins at all...
Kuja left.
Vivi: Wait! What about the black mages?
Zidane: No, Vivi! It's too dangerous! Whoa!
The jesters are lifted off the ground to the rhythmic pulse, dragged upwards back to back very slowly.
Eiko: Zidane, something's wrong.
Zidane: I thought we defeated them!

And thus Meltigemini shows up!

Here's a Theory on their origin from Kenji...

Well what I think happend was.......Zorn and Thorn were once one Being (MeltiGemini) They Were Probably a Eidolion or somthing then Garlet or Kuja or Someone probably Sommoned them Then they Battled and Lost(MeltiGemini was Easier than Zorn and Thorn) Then its safe to say that whoever Sommoned them lost Complete Controle over them for a while there was probably a third peice of them somewhere in the world that may have been sort of Like there Good and Evil(Which would explain why they were Neither)Then Kuja Finds it and Regains control after Brahne Kicks out Zorn and Thorn. So they do these Missions and like a few days later a Holy Sommon Comes (That probably was what seperated them) and out Comes MeltiGemini(which for some Reson Reminds me Czechoslavakia)

Maybe they were once one (Meltigemini, like you suggested) and perhaps only half-summoned. Now suppose that they got killed while being half-summoned and were split into two. That's what I've been thinking.

P.S. Did you ever realize how remarkably Kefka looks like Thorn and Zorn? Perhaps Kefka is Thorn and Zorn as one (in a human form).....
