Vrumugun:Background

Yes, I'm spelling it Vrumugun cause that's how they spell it on the back of my tapes. So here's where you get to learn about everyone's favorite creepy clone wizard. SPOILERS AHEAD?!?!

Japanese Voice Actor: Nagashima Yuuichi
English Voice Actor: Carter Cathcart (Ep13) and Jimmy Zoppi for the rest

As far as I'm aware (Vrumugun may secretly visit hair dying booths on his free time and wear contacts, who knows), he has brown hair, blue eyes, and generally dresses in brownish, dark, muted tones. It's kind of interesting since Vrumugun has one of the most conservative outfits on the entire show, and looks almost exactly like your average monk. Although in the first series it seems like most people's outfits weren't too ridiculous (as opposed to the pure silliness of, say... Almayce).

Vrumugun is pretty tall, although I'm not sure how tall exactly. :O He matches up fairly well to the girls, and I think is maybe a head or so shorter than Gourry (but Gourry's super tall anyway, so) but there's no real definitive comparison I've noticed. He does match up fairly well with Zangulus in terms of height, I think, although if I had to go one way or the other, I'd say Vrumugun is probably shorter by like, a miniscule amount.

I have absolutely no clue how old Vrummy is.

And there's also some discussion over his name, more so than almost any other Slayers character! Variations I have seen are...

Vrumnegun, Vrumnegen, Vrumagun, Vrumagan, Vrumagen, Vrumegan, Vrumugan, Vrumnegan, Vrumegen, Vrumugen, Vrumnugun, Vrumngun, Vruumigan...It's a lot like the whole Zelgadiss/Zelgadis Greywords/Graywords/Greywers/Graywers, Xelloss/Xellos, Sylphiel/Shilfiel/Shilfyl/Sylfiel/Sylfiel, Zangalas/Zangalus/Zangulas/Zangelus deal. I could go on for hours, seriously. There's an alternate romanization for practically every character. Why did I mention this? In case someone is lookin for Vrummy info/pictures/whatever (hahaha okay i know but let's just say it might happen, maybe) but doesn't spell it the official way. Or whatever. ANYWAY...

Vrumugun first shows up on Tape 4 of Slayers, heralding the beginning of a streak of wacky filler episodes. More specifically, Episode 13, and he sticks around until Episode 18, where he gets killed a whole bunch of times and then is out of the series (at least, until his cameo at the end of Next).

Vrumugun is your typical mage, albeit one who seems to focus on and be adept at Ice type magic, considering all the Freeze Arrows and such he tosses around. He can cast other spells though, although he doesn't do it very frequently. However, the only time you see the REAL Vrumugun is at the VERY end of Slayers Next, where he stops by his old pal Zangulus' wedding for like, two seconds. Anyway, the reason fer this is...

All the Vrumuguns you see in the main series with the red crystals in the middle of their foreheads are Copies. Or Kopiis (I'm telling you the romanization differences never stop with Slayers). ANYWAY, they were created by an obsessive lady called Eris. Somehow. There's never much explanation given to how they're made exactly, if I recall, or how she got him to go along with it, if he even did. Heck, she could have just mugged him, threw him in a cell somewhere, and sent his clones to go and attack Lina. And the Copies aren't terribly bright or emotive either, but it's hard to say. I think I'm getting off the point. I'll start from the beginning.

First of all, Lina, Gourry, and Amelia end up in Seyruun, Amelia's hometown. There are all these wanted posters all over the place (Zel's was really cute, by the way) and Amelia flips out and starts chasin Lina and Gourry around, blah blah blah wacky hijinx. That stuff isn't that important. What IS important is when Lina falls into a trap set by *dun dun dun* Zangulus and Vrumugun.

Vrumugun and Zangulus say that they were sent to bring Lina and Gourry (but not Zel, fer some reason) to Sairaag. Lina, as expected, tells them to buzz off. THUS WE HAVE THE BASIC THRUST OF THE CONFLICT BETWEEN THESE TWO GROUPS in that Zangulus and Vrumugun want Lina and company to go to Sairaag, and Lina and company are not entirely enthused about the idea. Wacky hijinx ensue over a variety of filler episodes AS IS THE SLAYERS WAY. God I love this series so much.

In the meantime with all this chasing around and such, Vrumugun gets nailed by a Dragon Slave or two, and obviously dies. However, by the next episode he's back to life. You might think "hey, maybe the writers are lazy" but no, this is actually related to the Copy thing I mentioned above. Zangulus seems to be aware of the entire thing (or that Vrumugun can "come back to life" in a way), although it's hard to say. ("The Phoenix returns..." well that could mean anything, frick who knows)

In one of the episodes amidst all this silliness, you find out that the top of Vrumugun's head is shaved hahaha. A TONSURE. Again, playing to that monk thing he's going for.

Anyway, after tape 5 things get serious again, and they meet up with Vrumugun. Vrumugun and Lina have a magical battle that doesn't really go anywhere cause apparently, they're evenly matched or something (??????) and Lina decides to go with her sword. Vrumugun doesn't think she's dangerous (vrumugun wtf seriously) and she kills him. Vrumugun dies...again. Then another one materializes behind Lina and grabs her in a headlock. Lina easily flips this one over and he gets stabbed with an icicle. Then two more Vrumuguns appear and tell Lina that she can keep killin them and they'll just keep comin back. So Lina, I think, wisely deduces their Kopiis. Then Zelgadis comes in, kills da two Vrumuguns, then wounds Eris so the NEXT two Vrumuguns can't attack. Then he kills them too, I think, and then Vrumugun POOFS outta da series until Slayers Next.

An interesting thing to note about the Slayers Next cameo is that he's missing the ruby on his forehead, the one that controlled him. Vrumugun is freeeeee~ and he has kind of a mullet, hahahahahaha

Also, info from this page has brought to light that there are quite a few differences between Vrumugun in the anime and Vrumugun in the novels. Apparently, there wasn't even a Vrumugun at all! Instead, it was all Eris, whose last NAME was Vrumugun, who controlled people and used them as shields to protect her identity, giving them the alias of Vrumugun. This stuff is completely fascinating to me.

I wonder if there are many differences in the manga? Or if he's even IN the manga. I should look this stuff up someday.
